The beloved Wanamaker Building has anchored Philadelphia’s Market East neighborhood for more than 150 years. As part of the building’s adaptive reuse, PAU’s design for its public spaces preserves the historic Beaux-Arts façade and Grand Court – home to the famed organ, bronze eagle statue, and annual Christmas light show – while reimagining the entrances, arcades, and central atrium to be more open, inviting, and connected to the city. Construction on the project is expected to begin next year.

PAU’s scope centers on the rehabilitation of the Grand Court, primary entrances, and arcades. The project strengthens the building’s role as a civic destination by adding new entries, improving circulation, and restoring clear visual and spatial connections between the interior and the surrounding streets. At the heart of the work is the Grand Court, home to the famed Wanamaker Organ, bronze eagle statue, and annual holiday light show. The design preserves the space’s ceremonial character while reconfiguring adjacent circulation, retail frontages, and entry sequences to better support daily use and large public gatherings. Way-finding is clarified and sight-lines across levels are reinforced to reestablish the Grand Court as the building’s primary orienting space.

At the perimeter, the project rethinks the building’s entrances through a sensitive homage to Wanamaker’s retail history. Entrances along Market and Chestnut Streets are extended with new storefront doors that complement the existing historic bronze metalwork, while signage and awnings recall earlier retail eras. A central arcade is reasserted as a primary arterial leading directly to the Grand Court. The new entries strengthen views to the interior; the design draws the city back into the building and repositions Wanamaker as a porous and accessible part of downtown life.
